The best supermini on the road has done it again. 2022 has been a great year for the new Mazda 2, which has seen a number of changes that not only offer a robust and pleasurable driving experience but includes a number of comfort and practical features. This Mazda 2 review is going to take you through all the changes and features we think make the already loveable car just that bit more special.
The exterior Kodo design
From every angle, the Mazda 2 looks sporty, sharp and stylish, with a design that will look good for years to come. This is thanks to the award-winning Kodo - Soul of Motion design philosophy, the Mazda 2 elicits the idea of motion, like an exotic animal ready to pounce.
As for design changes, they're more subtle this time around. The Mazda 2 still hones the much-loved motion design, with a striking black honeycomb grill and 16-inch alloy wheels as standard for the G15 Pure SP. Across the Mazda 2 range, there are 8 paint options, including the all-new Platinum Quartz Metallic.
A neat and functional interior
Taking design cues from the exterior, the interior offers a space that has stylish lines and curves, yet not sacrificing any conveniences. The Mazda 2 is a driver-focused car, meaning the cabin is designed around the driver. Media and control buttons are placed in easy-to-reach locations that utilise the driver's eye line so everything is easy to find.
Don't think that the small form factor means there isn't any room for passengers in the rear seats. Now with seatbelt sensors, and plenty of leg room, you can safely transport the kids to school or to the soccer match.
With 440 litres of boot space, the Mazda 2 is the gift that keeps on giving. Opening up the boot of the Mazda 2 almost feels like entering the TARDIS - it feels bigger on the inside. Thanks to clever design and shaving off space where it's not needed, you can comfortably fit a rather large amount of things into the boot.
Under the bonnet
As per Mazda's whole design philosophy, it's all about motion and drive, so of course, a lot of attention will be focused on how the Mazda 2 performs. Rather than a sluggish diesel or laggy turbo, the Mazda 2 is fitted with a naturally aspirated 1.5L petrol engine which produces 82kW of power and 144Nm of torque.
Mazda has continued to improve and fine-tune its engines, ensuring a great fuel economy with no reduction to its great performance. The compact and lightweight design means that it is a great nimble city car that's no slouch on the highway when it needs to get moving.
A car for everyone
Now that you know a bit about the Mazda 2, it's time to talk about the options and go into some of the differences between them. This way you'll know which one is right for you.
Up first is the G15 Pure, this is the cheapest option for those wanting the simple package. But this doesn't mean it's not feature-packed or not a blast to drive. It still has the spirited 1.5L petrol engine, so it's no slouch. As for standard equipment, there is a range of surprising features. They come with a 7-inch touch infotainment system with Apple Carplay, Android Auto and digital radio. Leather-wrapped gear stick, handbrake and steering wheel for a better driver-focused experience. As well as push-button start, blind-spot monitoring, cruise control and more.
The next in line is the G15 Pure SP, which adds to the already exhaustive list of features in the Pure line. Think of the SP as being more of a sporty upgrade, with visual enhancements. With it, the SP includes 16-inch alloy wheels, black painted mirrors and grille, and a chrome painted exhaust tip.
Moving onto the 3rd option we have the G15 Evolve, with a host of great features that make driving a better experience. This package includes automatic daytime-running LED lights, climate control, satellite navigation, rain-sensor wipers and advanced traffic sign recognition.
Finally, there is the G15 GT, this is for those that want the already sprinty Mazda 2 to sizzle that bit more. This one is all about offering the best driving experience there is to offer for a small car. With luxurious Blue Great leather and suede seats, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry, 360-degree camera, and adaptive cruise control.
A hands-on wheel driving experience
It's all well and good to talk about features, specs and leather seats, but what about how it actually feels to drive? Well, we can comfortably say, without a doubt it's great. If it isn't any indicator already, we think the Mazda 2 is one of, if not the best supermini on the road.
On the road, the Mazda 2 spirited 1.5L petrol engine is happy to sit at 100 on the freeway all day and is just as happy to make its way around narrow streets, and busy traffic. With the smooth automatic transmission driving in the city is a breeze. Don't think the manual is by any means bad either; Mazda is renowned for its responsive and tight manual transmissions, so if you didn't pitch in a little extra for the automatic, you'll have no worries getting around.
Whilst you won't be winning any races in the Mazda 2, you'll most definitely be feeling the most comfortable and safe on the road. The low purchase costs, and excellent fuel consumption, means the Mazda 2 is a high contender for the best supermini car of 2022.
