There's no question that the newly updated Mazda 2 is an excellent car, but how do you choose between the Mazda 2 hatch and the sedan body style? Use this guide to help make your decision.
Equivalent equipment and safety features
The majority of features in the Mazda 2 are the same regardless of which body shape you choose. Both body styles are identical when it comes to the equipment included such as the infotainment system, keyless entry and push start button and more. Likewise, the safety elements of the Mazda 2 are equivalent regardless of the body style you choose thanks to Mazda's commitment to safety with their i-ACTIVSENSE safety technology that is rolled out across Mazda's entire range of cars, including the Mazda 2.
Despite comparable features in terms of equipment and safety, there are some key differences between the hatch and sedan body shapes that you should consider when choosing which car is right for you.
Look and design
Viewing the cars from the front, both body styles look very similar in terms of design. The Mazda 2 harmoniously integrates the multi reflector head lamps, fog lights, bumpers and grille design, creating a sleek and stylish look synonymous with the Mazda brand. Both are good-looking cars, with the hatchback giving a slightly more sportier look compared to the sedan.
Viewing the cars from the rear, the Mazda 2 hatch has a different set of rear lights compared to the sedan, and preference really depends on personal choice. The sedan has similar rear lights to bigger Mazda versions such as the Mazda 3 or the Mazda 6.
Boot space
The sedan body style is the bigger car, with an increased body length of approximately 260mm compared to the Mazda 2 hatch. This is due to the extra boot space offered with the sedan compared to the hatchback. The Mazda 2 hatch may be smaller, with a cargo capacity of 250 litres and 60/40 folding seatbacks that don't quite fold flat, yet it remains pretty good at swallowing cargo. The sedan on the other hand provides almost double the amount of boot capacity compared to the hatch at 440 litres, yet continues to look well-proportioned.
How you plan to use the car
How you plan to use your new car is an important consideration when it comes to choosing between the Mazda 2 hatch and sedan. If you are more likely to use it for city driving then the hatchback may be more suitable for you due to its smaller size – perfect for manoeuvring tight streets and getting into those tricky parking spots. If, on the other hand, you are after more storage space and comfort when accommodating and transporting the whole family, the sedan may be a wiser choice.
